The Franco-Italian multinational STMicroelectronics is keen to get involved in the world of artificial intelligence, as demonstrated by its presence in the Industrial Council on Artificial Intelligence Research (ICAIR) and its involvement in the design of the “Software Republic“. On 19 May, the group announced the acquisition of Cartesiam, a software publisher based in Toulon specialising in artificial intelligence. The firm hopes to strengthen its technological portfolio and enter the AI market a little further.
Cartesiam, a software publisher specialising in machine learning
Founded in 2016, Cartesiam designs tools that use machine learning on ARM microcontrollers, thanks to which a lot of machines work. One of its flagship solutions is NanoEdge AI Studio: it allows embedded system designers, sometimes uninitiated in AI, to develop specialized libraries integrating machine learning algorithms in many applications.
Several devices using Cartesiam’s technology are currently being produced: connected devices, industrial machines, household appliances, etc. The development of these innovations is possible thanks to its team of experts in embedded signal processing and data scientists who work together to try to provide customized solutions.
Acquisition to strengthen STMicroelectronics’ artificial intelligence strategy
The multinational STMicroelectronics recently acquired Cartesiam. This move is one of the initiatives taken by the firm to strengthen its artificial intelligence strategy, as Claude Dardanne, President of the Microcontrollers and Digital Integrated Circuits Group at STMicroelectronics, states:
“Using artificial intelligence to create ever smarter solutions is one of the priorities of our customers, regardless of their size or industry.”
The acquisition strengthens the brand’s technology portfolio to address all of its machine learning needs. According to STMicroelectronics, the Toulon-based company’s NanoEdge AI Studio solution is complementary to its STM32Cube.AI range of tools. Claude Dardanne explains:
“With STM32Cube.AI, STMicroelectronics already offers the ability to map and run pre-trained artificial neural networks on our wide range of STM32 microcontrollers. The addition of Cartesiam’s machine learning technology to STMicroelectronics’ existing solutions will provide the best portfolio of edge AI solutions on the market for any customer looking to bring additional innovation to their offering.”
With this deal, the French-Italian firm hopes to offer its customers additional flexibility in integrating machine learning into their solutions. At this time, while this acquisition is inked, the terms have not been disclosed.
