Renault and Google strengthen their partnership to create the connected car of tomorrow

Initiated in 2018, the collaboration between the Renault group and Google is accelerating. On November 8, the group announced the signing of new contracts for the design and implementation of the digital architecture of the Software Defined Vehicle, the connected vehicle of the future, and for strengthening the group’s digitalization. The two partners will develop a set of software components dedicated to the “Software Defined Vehicle” platform, both onboard and at the vehicle’s periphery, and will create a digital twin in the cloud.

Renault first partnered with Google in 2018 to integrate the Android Automotive operating system into in-car multimedia displays, which can now be found in the Megane E-Tech.

In 2020, the group and Google signed a new partnership concerning the optimization of the production lines of its 22 plants: the billions of data collected every day by the quality control tools are hosted and analyzed by Google cloud. Google Cloud’s solutions and its experience in smart analytics, machine learning and AI, allow the Renault Group to improve the efficiency of its supply chain and manufacturing, the quality of its production, but also to reduce its environmental impact. The agreement also included data training for 40,000 employees from Renault’s process engineering, manufacturing and IT teams.

This cloud collaboration is being strengthened to create a digital twin with advanced AI technologies to facilitate the continuous integration of services into the vehicle and the creation of new on-board or off-board applications on demand. Ultimately, it should enable the Renault group to gain agility, performance and profitability.

Luca de Meo, CEO of the Renault group, states:

“The complexity of the car’s electronic architecture is increasing exponentially, driven by the sophistication of the features and services customers expect. With a shared computing platform, continuous updates and streamlined access to car data, the SDV approach developed in partnership with Google will transform our vehicles into more technological objects.”

Accelerating Renault’s end-to-end digital transformation

This strategic partnership announced on November 8 is part of the group’s “Move to Cloud” digital transformation. It will enable the group to accelerate its end-to-end digital transformation, from car design to manufacturing to market launch, and bring added value to its customers.

Through this agreement, Renault will be able to deepen its use of Google Cloud technologies for software development, for the “Software Defined Vehicle” and to better manage data capture and analysis, in a secure manner and with respect for personal data confidentiality.

Initial use cases in development include:

  • Predictive maintenance to better detect and rectify failures in near real time;
  • Personalized in-vehicle experience (In-Car services) to adapt to driving behaviors, common destinations (electric charging stations)…
  • Insurance models based on actual usage and driving behaviors.
