It was at its annual “5G Summit” event in San Diego, California, that Qualcomm unveiled an expanded roadmap of advanced 5G and AI robotics solutions with the introduction of the Qualcomm Robotics RB6 platform and the Qualcomm RB5 AMR reference design. These latest advanced Edge AI solutions will enable new commercial realities, including AMRs, delivery robots, highly automated manufacturing robots, collaborative robots, UAM aircraft, industrial drone infrastructure, autonomous defense solutions…

Qualcomm is a global leader in wireless innovation and a driving force behind the development, launch and expansion of 5G. 5G is designed to connect not only people, but also sensors, computing devices and other elements in diverse environments. Beyond fast, reliable and secure communications, it offers greater connection density (at least 1.5 million devices per square kilometer).

The Qualcomm® Robotics RB6 platform and Qualcomm® RB5 AMR reference design combine enhanced AI and 5G to power next-generation robotics, drones and smart machines. As a result, they will enable the creation of more productive, autonomous and advanced robots.

These innovative solutions will support scalable applications for OEMs and robot manufacturers looking to integrate ground robots into various industrial use cases, including government service applications, logistics, healthcare, retail, warehousing, agriculture, construction, utilities etc…. They will accelerate the digital transformation of industries and serve as a key catalyst for Industry 4.0.

Dev Singh, Senior Director of Business Development and Head of Autonomous Robotics, Drones and Intelligent Machines at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc, said:

“Building on the successful growth and traction of Qualcomm Technologies’ advanced robotics solutions, our expanded solution roadmap will help bring enhanced AI and 5G technologies to support smarter, safer and more advanced innovations in robotics, drones and intelligent machines. We are powering robotic innovations with 5G connectivity and advanced AI that will transform the way we think about and address the ever-changing challenges and industry expectations in the digital economy.”

Expanded premium features

The Qualcomm Robotics RB6 platform

Built on the foundation of the company’s leading robotics platforms, the new Qualcomm Robotics RB6 solution delivers industry-leading 5G connectivity with support for sub-6 GHz and mmWave global bands in consumer, enterprise and private networks.

Qualcomm’s robotics platforms have a flexible architecture with expansion cards to support scalable connectivity features, so Qualcomm Robotics RB6 will be able to support 3GPP Release 15 and Releases 16, 17 and 18 features when the cards become available. The elevated platform offers best-in-class video processing and advanced artificial intelligence capabilities using the enhanced Qualcomm AI engine, with support for 70 to 200 trillion operations per second (TOPS) (INT8).

Qualcomm Robotics RB6 includes a comprehensive, customizable and easy-to-use hardware and software development toolkit. Developers have flexible software capabilities with a fully integrated, high-end AI software development kit (SDK), the Qualcomm® Intelligent Multimedia SDK. This SDK brings together multimedia, AI and ML, computer vision (CV) and networking building blocks to support end-to-end deployment of robotic applications.

RB5 AMR Reference Design

The Qualcomm RB5 AMR reference design is the first AMR reference design to offer tightly integrated AI and 5G enhanced capabilities. This new solution accelerates the development of commercial robots, unlocking innovative opportunities for industries looking to adopt robotics solutions and reap the benefits of solutions at the connected smart edge.
