Launch of the 7th wave of the i-Nov component of the Innovation Contest

The 7th edition of the i-Nov Contest, financed by the State through the Programme d’Investissements d’Avenir (PIA) and operated by Bpifrance and ADEME, has been launched. Applications are open to start-ups and SMEs until 11 May 2021. This wave 7 of the competition aims to support innovative projects led by start-ups and SMEs around 8 themes.

The i-Nov Innovation Contest supports the accelerated emergence of companies with the potential to become world-class leaders in their field. It provides co-financing for research, development and innovation projects with total costs of between €600,000 and €5 million. Eight themes are on the programme.

4 themes are operated by ADEME

  • Renewable energies, storage and energy systems including hydrogen: energy production technologies and energy carriers; hydrogen; energy storage solutions; observability, operability, safety and management of networks, modelling; development of techno-economic models for grid-connected micro-grids; creation of gateways between networks/energy carriers.
  • Sustainable and intelligent mobility: eco-design, recyclability and energy multifunctionality; new generations of low-emission vehicles; intelligent services or systems for logistics; multimodal management and regulation of people’s mobility; inclusive, solidarity-based and environmentally friendly transport and mobility at major sporting events.
  • Challenges of the energy and ecological transition in industry and agriculture: improving the energy performance of production systems, equipment or processes; optimising the consumption of raw materials; improving production processes in the agri-food industries; transition to agro-ecology; development of new emerging agricultural and food production systems.
  • Water and biodiversity: development of nature in cities and limiting the consumption of natural, agricultural and forest areas; recovery of micro- and macro-plastics; innovative metrology systems; water savings and integrated water management; recovery of resources contained in wastewater; limiting collisions between cetaceans and ships.

Bpifrance operates in 4 thematic areas

  • Digital Deep Tech: quantum technologies and other disruptive architectures for digital computing components; artificial intelligence and big data processing; blockchain; augmented reality, virtual reality; 5G; reduction of the ecological footprint associated with digital technology.
  • Transforming the cultural and creative industries through digital technology: innovations likely to open new markets or create new fields of activity (e.g. rights management in blockchain, image recognition through AI, virtual reality applied to fields not covered today, etc.).
  • Health – Diagnosis, screening and monitoring of pathologies: devices based on new sensors or biomarkers; signal processing technologies or methodologies to aid reading or interpretation; pooling methods or technologies; devices that can be easily used in the home; integrated systems for detection, prediction and monitoring in hospitals or communities; water monitoring methods or technologies; modelling tools.
  • Proteins and ferments of the future : Pre and probiotics, fermented foods, protein-rich foods using new technologies, new formulations and new resources, innovative products integrating new protein sources and ferments; innovative equipment, processes and technological solutions for plant protein breeding and ferment production, processing, preservation and marketing of new products, optimisation of plant associations, for food ; development of technological functionalities paving the way for the creation of new products contributing to the diversification of diets; organisational and digital innovation to enhance the environmental and nutritional services provided by proteins and ferments.

The deadline for applications is 12:00 (noon) on 11 May 2021.

This call for projects is part of the “Innovation Contest” continuum, which is divided into 3 complementary parts: i-PhD, i-Lab and i-Nov. The Innovation Contest marks a commitment by the State through funding, labelling and reinforced communication to support the development of highly innovative and technological companies. Upstream, the i-PhD and i-Lab competitions aim to encourage the emergence and creation of deeptech start-ups born of advances in French cutting-edge research. Downstream, the i-Nov competition supports innovative development projects led by start-ups and SMEs.
