ITU launches “AI for Good neural network”, a new platform for sustainable development

On February 1, the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) announced the launch of a new community platform powered by artificial intelligence and invited people to join the “AI for Good neural network” without further delay. This AI-based networking platform aims to accelerate global collaboration on the use of AI to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations for 2030.

AI for Good is a nonprofit organization that brings together the best minds and technologies to solve the world’s most pressing challenges. Founded in 2015 by a team of machine learning and social science researchers in the United States and Europe, organized by ITU in partnership with 40 UN system organizations, it coordinates annual summits in Geneva, Switzerland. It provides a global and inclusive platform that promotes AI to advance health, climate, gender, inclusive prosperity, sustainable infrastructure, and other priorities of the 17 SDGs. A new AI-powered community platform to scale up global collaboration on using AI to advance sustainable development has been created by ITU: the AI for Good Neural Network.

The AI for Good Neural Network

The AI for Good Neural Network is designed to accelerate exchanges between government and industry, fostering partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations for 2030 through AI. In its release, the ITU states:

“The new networking tool includes AI-enabled smart matching to help users connect with innovators and experts, link innovative ideas to social impact opportunities, and bring the community together to discuss applications of AI for social good.”

Houlin Zhao, ITU Secretary General, states:

“This new state-of-the-art tool puts AI for Good to work for the United Nations and our global community in a way that was not possible just a few years ago.

AI for Good has helped to boost innovation, foster knowledge exchange, and promote the achievements of AI through practical applications. ITU’s AI for Good neural network will intensify research and collaborations through AI and machine learning:

“AI and ML are gaining momentum in ITU”s standardization work, with research, analysis and discussions with stakeholders on network orchestration and management, multimedia coding, quality of service assessment and various aspects of telecom management, operations and services, as well as on wired networks, all supporting accelerated digital transformation in key industry verticals.”

Chaesub Lee, director of ITU’s standards office, adds:

“Artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) are enabling very practical applications across multiple industries and sectors – applications with tremendous potential to serve as a force for good.”

The platform offers thousands of hours of on-demand content, networking features and virtual exhibitions, as well as weekly live sessions and interactive content. Community members can connect with each other, receive personalized content and pursue engagement aligned with their profiles, goals and needs.

“The solution aims to foster unprecedented cooperation across borders, promote impactful SDG-focused partnerships in AI, and directly serve Goal 17: Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.”

The AI for Good neural network is open to anyone interested in how AI can positively impact the future of humanity.
