IDEMIA and CEA strengthen their collaboration to secure citizens’ digital activities

The IDEMIA group, world leader in Augmented Identity, announced in early January the signature of a collaboration agreement with the CEA (Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives). Both have already conducted joint projects in the past, they will now design and develop new innovative solutions optimized to secure and facilitate citizens’ transactions.

IDEMIA

IDEMIA, a leader in biometric security born in 2017 from the merger between Oberthur Technologies and Morpho, the former identity/security subsidiary of engine manufacturer Safran, aims to provide a trusted environment for citizens in their daily lives: accessing public or private places, traveling, paying or connecting… Its objective is to provide complete solutions that enable a simple and fluid experience everywhere and at any time where security matters. IDEMIA is one of the most active companies in Research and Development with nearly 1,500 active patent families, many of which are directly related to digital technologies. Pierre Barrial, President and CEO, IDEMIA states:

“I am proud to be at the helm of a company whose objective, since its inception, has been to make the world safer, everywhere and at every moment where Identity and Security matter, in an increasingly digital world. IDEMIA’s 15,000 employees around the world form a highly motivated team. They are committed to serving the businesses and governments that trust us in a reliable, ethical and environmentally friendly manner. By reinventing the way we think about identity and through our cutting-edge technologies we envision a better future for consumers and citizens.”

The CEA

The French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA) is a public scientific, technical and industrial research organization (EPIC). A key player in research, development and innovation, it operates in four areas: defense and security, low-carbon energy (nuclear and renewable), technological research for industry and fundamental research (material and life sciences). Its media library offers numerous multimedia resources for the general public. The CEA participates, along with the CNRS and INRIA, in the research program of the national strategy for cybersecurity announced on January 18, 2021 by Emmanuel Macron, as well as in the national strategy for the cloud presented on November 2, 2021 by Cédric O, Secretary of State for Digital Transition and Communications. The CEA is contributing to the implementation of collaborative projects with numerous academic and industrial partners.

IDEMIA-CEA collaboration

IDEMIA and the CEA have already collaborated in the past, notably on the design of a fingerprint sensor developed as part of the European PiezoMAT project and cryptological protocols. This agreement will structure their cooperation for the coming years in the fields of privacy, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. It aims to strengthen the reliability and security of innovative solutions optimized for semantic analysis of video content, deep learning and learning as well as cryptographic solutions and protocols for the protection of personal data. Jean-Christophe Fondeur, CTO of IDEMIA Group, assures:

“I am delighted that the major players in research and technological innovation that are the CEA and IDEMIA, are combining their strengths and expertise for the development of identity, security solutions based on artificial intelligence and cryptography for uses such as border crossing, access control, for the automotive industry, private sector companies and governments, while guaranteeing the respect of privacy.”

For his part, Stéphane Siebert, Chief Technology Officer at CEA, explains:

“Digital is a challenge for competitiveness, sovereignty and social life. The CEA is present throughout the value chain and plays a national role in mastering several essential technologies and transferring them to the industrial sphere. This collaboration with IDEMIA, a major player in the field of security, artificial intelligence and privacy, allows us to strengthen the French innovation capacity at the heart of the digital activities that are being established in today’s world.”
