Four new countries join the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence

The first summit of the Global Partnership for Artificial Intelligence (GPIA) was held in Montreal on December 3 and 4. On this occasion, the Franco-Canadian PMIA initiative was expanded to include four new member states, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland and Brazil.

Officially launched on 15 June 2020, the PMIA has 15 founding members: France, Canada, Australia, the Republic of Korea, the European Union, Germany, Italy, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union. The goal of this international, multi-stakeholder initiative is to promote the responsible use of AI in a spirit of respect for human rights, inclusion, diversity, innovation and economic growth. To achieve these objectives, member countries work through the PMIA to build bridges between theory and practice, to support research activities or the application of trusted artificial intelligence.

Democratic values, human rights, accountability, transparency, diversity, inclusiveness and privacy are at the core of the values of PMIA and its work.

On the occasion of this first summit, the PMIA bodies (steering committee and council) were officially set up and the first works undertaken by the researchers were presented in plenary session. The experts are notably supported by two centres of expertise located in Paris, hosted by Inria, and in Montreal, hosted by the Montreal International Centre of Expertise for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (CIMIA). Working groups focus on 4 main themes: “Future of Work” and “Innovation & Commercialization” in Paris, and “Responsible AI” and “Data Governance” in Montreal. An additional group dedicated to Covid-19 was launched in 2020 to help address the global health crisis.

This session also confirmed the momentum behind the initiative. Spain, the Netherlands, Poland and Brazil joined the initiative, bringing the number of PMIA member states to 19. The newly elected Steering Committee members include 5 States (France, Canada, United States, Italy and Japan) and 6 AI experts (see list below).

France, which has been designated as the incoming vice-presidency, will assume the presidency in 2022. Canada will hold the presidency until the fall of 2021. The next PMIA Summit will be held in Paris.
