As part of the cycle of international conferences on AI organized in the Alpes-Maritimes department (06), a debate will be organized around AI and women. On Wednesday, September 8, 2021, from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, this conference will focus on the role that women play in the advent of a more human-centered AI for our planet, our economy and our society. The event will be organised by the EuropIA Institute and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
The current situation between the world of artificial intelligence and women
In recent months, initiatives involving women and artificial intelligence have become more and more frequent. Rightly so, since at present the proportion of women is only 10% in engineering schools and 15% among AI engineers. Moreover, only 15% of innovative start-ups are founded or co-founded by women and barely 6% are founded by an all-female team. In Europe, about 5% of venture capital goes to mixed teams and only 2% to exclusively female teams.
To remedy this, the Cercle InterElles launched the “Women & AI” pact for a responsible and non-sexist AI with the participation of sixteen companies from the scientific and technological world: CEA, Dassault Systems, EDF, Engie, GE, IBM, Intel, Lenovo, NGE, Orange, Orano, Qualcomm, Salesforce, SAP, Schlumberger and SNCF.
In addition, on 13 July 2021, Mariya Gabriel announced the launch of the Women TechEU pilot project by the European Commission. This project aims to reduce gender inequalities in innovation. In particular, it supports “deep tech” start-ups led by women by awarding grants up to €75,000, as well as a first-class coaching and mentoring scheme delivered by the Women Leadership Programme (EIC).
A debate on AI and women as part of a lecture series
On Wednesday 8 September 2021, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm, the Europa AI Institute and EIC will host a debate on women in AI and the role they play in bringing about a more human-centric AI for our society, our economy and our planet. Marco Landi, former President of Apple Computer in Cupertino, President of the SMART DEAL 06 Expert Committee, and President of the EuropIA Institute is behind this series of international conferences on AI in the Alpes Maritimes.
Charles Ange Ginésy, President of the Alpes-Maritimes Department and John W.H Denton AO, Secretary General of the ICC, will introduce this conference. They will be accompanied by keynote speaker Mariya Gabriel, the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. The conference will also include contributions from female experts in senior positions in large companies as well as from the next generation of female AI experts.
The event will take place at the Maison de l’AI in Sophia Antipolis. In order to attend, it is necessary to have a health pass (complete vaccination cycle or negative PCR test less than 72 hours old). It is also possible to attend the conference via Zoom.
