Between March 6th and March 13th, #GirlsinAI, a 100% digital hackathon was organised by Teens in AI with the support of Société Générale. The competition was attended by young people aged between 12 and 18, from 25 different countries, with priority given to girls. The hackathon focused on gender equality and reducing inequalities.
These two topics that set the framework for #GirlsinAI were related to two of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With the help of Marion Cabrol, senior data scientist for Société Générale’s wholesale activities and Lorraine Nyembi Benjenj, senior data scientist at Inspection Générale and Audit, participants were able to get concerted feedback on “careers in tech and women in tech” but also on “what is AI and what is not”.
In parallel to these round tables, the participants from each country had to propose AI-based solutions to the topics previously discussed, while being accompanied by Societe Generale and Accenture mentors who are experts in design thinking, data science, ethics and project management. Their idea, as well as its conception and development, was then to be presented, on March 19, to a competent jury composed of these mentors, including :
- Céline Thiam, Société Générale Senegal
- Salomé Amar, Market Activity
- Corinne Devot, Global Transaction & Payment Services
- Alexandre Beaumont, Société Générale Singapore
- Zainaba EL Khald, Head of Innovation
Claire Calmejane, Director of Innovation at Société Générale also participated in this hackathon for France, and selected the project presented by the French participants. Moreover, she underlines the success of this Hackathon:
“The quality and maturity of the projects presented is proof that this hackathon was a real accelerator and an opportunity to inspire this next generation of practitioners, researchers or entrepreneurs to an ethical approach to AI”
A beneficial experience for everyone that Société Générale and Teens in AI would like to repeat in the months or years to come.
